Tower Hamlets’ local voluntary and community sector (VCS) organizations are set to benefit from a substantial funding boost of £3.5 million per year through the Mayor’s Community Grants Programme. The newly introduced funding initiative, developed in consultation with VCS groups and residents, will support projects running from November 2023 to March 2027.
The funding program aims to encompass a broad spectrum of organizations, ensuring diverse community segments benefit. Groups are encouraged to submit their applications by the deadline on Monday, June 5. Mayor Lutfur Rahman expressed satisfaction in providing financial support through the new funding scheme, acknowledging the vital role played by voluntary and community organizations in making Tower Hamlets a fairer, stronger, and more equitable place to live.
The funding will be directed towards projects aligned with five key themes, including tackling the cost of living, accelerating education, culture, jobs, business, and skills, investing in public services, and empowering communities while combating crime. Councillor Saied Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Resources and the Cost of Living, highlighted the positive role the council plays in supporting local community organizations, especially amid the challenges posed by the cost of living crisis.
A dedicated website (www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/MCGP) has been established, providing comprehensive information and support for the application process. The site also features details of in-person and online events where local groups can seek guidance and answers to their queries. Tower Hamlets’ strategic plan outlines priorities until 2026, emphasizing a commitment to long-term VCS funding.
With approximately 1300 VCS organizations in Tower Hamlets, the funding aims to support these crucial entities that serve as primary sources of advice, services, and support for residents. The council will further launch its Small Grants Programme in November, providing £800,000 annually to small and medium VCS organizations for initiatives enhancing residents’ lives.
